Company History

Founded in 2003, Vital Technologies united the vision of one of Maine’s leading HVAC contractors with the proven capabilities of former employees of Dumont Refrigeration (the original manufacturer of Zephyr dehumidification products).

Dan Thayer, P.E., cofounder and President of Thayer Corporation, recognizing the skills and value of the Dumont team, reunited them under the Thayer Corporate umbrella originally as Vital Air Technologies. Thayer Corporation (Contracting Business 2003 Commercial Contractor of the Year) provided a modern facility, financial discipline and a solid corporate structure coupled with a legacy of exceptional customer service. The “Aqua-TEC” indoor pool dehumidifier quickly established a reputation for quality equipment and support that meets the customer’s needs for Total Environmental Control. Specializing in the hotel/motel and residential markets, Aqua-TEC is not available in the largest sizes, however, for loads from 4 to 12 tons, there is no more reliable, high quality product available in the North American market. Aqua-TEC units are easy to operate and readily serviced, addressing two of the most important barriers to proper dehumidification and control of natatorium environments.

Being a manufacturer under the same roof with a leading HVAC contractor has unique advantages. According to Dan, “The insights that Thayer Corporation brings to the table as an experienced design/build/maintain contractor ensure that Vital Air and Vital Energy remain focused on the need for efficient and reliable equipment that can be easily serviced. In addition to producing quality equipment that is expected by the customer, Vital Technologies is committed to exceptional presale and post-sale support for contractors and engineers.”

DryMAX, the world’s first “Mini-Split Dehumidifier” is a case in point. Long a dream of Vital Air designers, the new product took shape influenced by the contractor experience with mini-split air conditioners. We have sought and listened carefully to the concerns and needs of the engineer, contractor and owner for an easily retrofitted solution to independent indoor humidity and temperature control. In development and testing for over two years, the first production units will be ready for shipment late in 2006. The first units will be limited to one size (2.5 tons) and a strict mini-split configuration. The product plan calls for an entire family of DryMAX products in 2 sizes and multiple configurations by late 2007. Like Aqua-TEC, DryMAX will be “Made by Hand in Maine”.

Finally, Dan and his team of experienced industry veterans are tuned to the opportunities for synergy between the reawakened solar heating and hot water industry and qualified HVAC contractors like Thayer Corporation. We have already invested time and resources in bringing solar thermal technologies into mainstream HVAC practice and are developing new solutions for further research and development, prototyping, testing and production. Most recently we acquired the New England distribution of Viessmann Biomass; the leading source for wood pellet and chip boilers in the world. Not content with the status quo, Vital Energy will become part of the inevitable solution to our growing energy dilemma.

Vital Technologies is today positioned to identify, develop and bring to market new products and solutions specifically aimed at supporting the design build HVAC contractor. The repositioned company incorporates two divisions; Vital Air, developing refrigeration and airside solutions, including specialty dehumidification equipment; and Vital Energy, researching the delivery and integration of cost effective renewable energy products, including solar thermal panels and biomass boilers. It is central to our vision to connect these technologies to end user applications through the established trades equipped with appropriate skills and a trusted position in the local community. Vital Technologies, as a subsidiary of Thayer Corporation, now stands uniquely positioned to provide quality manufactured equipment, unequalled customer service and proven design solutions for your environmental control needs.
